Yesterday, a century later in that same town, about 30,000 runners crossed the starting line. Distance running, once a niche sport, has exploded in popularity over the past few decades. Many of those who run marathons today are middle-aged or older, and some are less fit and less experienced. As a result, the average finish time in American marathons has slowed considerably, even as the top runners keep getting faster. It’s a sign of how popular marathons have become.

Why Illegal Border Crossings Are at Sustained HighsFor the second year in a row, the number of illegal crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border surpassed two million, according to government data released this month. The 2022 fiscal year set a record of 2.2 million illegal border crossings. Shifting U.S. policies, global migration patterns and changing migrant demographics all factor into the high levels of illegal border crossings of the past few years. Since then, the number of illegal border crossings has increased every month, and border patrol agents made nearly 220,000 apprehensions in September alone. They accounted for the third-most illegal border crossings in the past year, after Mexicans and Guatemalans.

☆ The Top U.S. Colleges With the Greatest Economic Diversity

As part of this week’s Education Issue of the magazine, The New York Times is publishing the College-Access Index, a list of the country’s most-selective universities ranked in order of economic diversity. For this updated version, we have measured economic diversity by analyzing the share of students receiving Pell Grants, which typically go to students from the bottom half of the income distribution. The list covers the 286 most-selective colleges in the country, defined by Barron’s Profiles of American Colleges and other metrics. Here, you see each college’s Pell share for the entering class in 2020-21, compared with the 2010-11 share. Schools are listed in order of economic diversity as measured by share of the student body receiving Pell Grants.

After the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade last year, it looked like the number of abortions would soon plummet across the country. The number of legal abortions has held steady, if not increased, nationwide since 2020, our colleagues Amy Schoenfeld Walker and Allison McCann reported today. The increase in use of those options has offset the decrease in abortions resulting from new state bans, Amy and Allison found. As you can see, states bordering those with bans largely saw increases in the number of abortions in the first half of 2023 compared with the same period in 2020. In Illinois, for example, estimated abortions rose 69 percent.

The indictment said Mr. Trump and six unnamed co-conspirators had pushed state legislators and election officials to change electoral votes won by Mr. Biden to votes for Mr. Trump. The first Times poll of the 2024 election cycle shows a dead heat between President Biden and Donald Trump. If those two men are the presidential nominees next year, 43 percent of registered voters say they will support Biden, and 43 percent say they will back Trump. But 43 plus 43 obviously does not equal 100. There are also 14 percent of registered voters who declined to choose either candidate. In the end, a significant number of them probably will vote for Biden or Trump and go a long way toward determining who occupies the White House in 2025.

America’s oldest professional sport looks different this year. For the first time in M.L.B.’s 148-year history, clocks in stadiums now count down between every pitch, forcing pitchers and batters into action. The changes — including the pitch clock and others meant to increase action — have led to much faster games with more hits, more stolen bases and less down time. Whether the changes will increase interest in baseball is another question.
